Winter Weather Safety

Winter is fast approaching! Please take a few minutes to make sure you are properly prepared.

Below are a few links to some helpful information.

Heater Safety

As cold weather moves in for the season, people are beginning to use their fireplaces and portable heaters.  Here are few safety tips to help keep you and your family safe.

  • Have your chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney specialist.
  • Clear the area around the hearth of debris, decorations and flammable materials.
  • Soak hot ashes in water and place them in a metal container outside your home.
  • Never use portable heaters to dry clothes or otherwise be covered with fabric.
  • Keep portable heaters at least 3 feet from any combustible (e.g. clothes, couches, beds, drapery, cabinetry).

Candle Safety

With the Holidays approaching, we caution everyone using candles. Here is some safety information for using candles.

  • If you use candles, ensure they are in sturdy metal, glass, or ceramic holders and placed where they cannot be easily knocked down.
  • Keep candles away from children and pets.
  • Use matches, lighters, and fire carefully.
  • Never allow kids to play with matches, lighters or candles.
  • Never put candles on a Christmas tree.
  • Never leave candles burning unattended.
  • Extinguish candles after use with a snuffer.

Fire Prevention Information

This year's theme is "Preventing Home Fires." Here are a few tips:

  1. Never leave food cooking unattended.
  2. Never leave candles unattended or used with out adult supervision.
  3. Leave at least 3 ft. clear space around all heaters.
